Founder and Coach

My journey in my career is exactly why I am ideal to coach other women scientists. Earlier in my career, I maintained a to-do list and scheduled activities on my calendar, but when it got to actually getting things done, I was not effective. I would rewrite sentences over and over to get it perfect. I would do easy things first, and procrastinate on harder tasks. This typically meant that I was doing work for other people’s research more than for my own. Most evenings, I would go to bed feeling shame or worry about what I didn’t get done that day. On the weekends, I worked or thought about doing research work all the time. I truly thought I had to prove myself by getting more done. As a mom and wife, I did so much for others, and I really started to lose my identity. That only reinforced my desire for external validation through my to-do lists, manuscripts, and grants. I didn’t’ see my worth independent of those academic products.

In the height of the pandemic, I realized what was most important to me: family, faith, my well-being. The amount of research I accomplish was not it. So I wanted to stop working all the time. But I had trouble changing that habit. Even after getting a grant, a moment you think you no longer have something to prove, I remained on the hamster wheel. I thought I couldn’t slow down or otherwise I would fail. I felt pressured to perform.

It wasn’t until I started to do daily self-coaching that I was able to stop overworking. The intentional effort allowed me to truly believe that my value is not dependent on what I have accomplished. I am committed to my purpose so now that inspires me to do my research, not fear. So, that purpose-driven perspective allows me to do the harder tasks with ease. So, I am not held back by my fears when I sit down to write papers and grants. I routinely stick to boundaries on work hours so I can spend time on what matters most to me. I have less anxiety, insecurity, and so much more self-trust.

Tangible evidence of my transformation is my funded R01 grant, R61 grant, >50 publications, promotion to Associate Professor, and an international reputation in my field.

In closing, I created this program so I can serve other women like me. I want to help others see their thoughts and change them. I want them to not be limited by fear because the world needs the benefits of their intellect and passion.
